INDIA: THE NEW YEAR, VIKRAM SAMVAT YEAR

In India the people of all the faiths and culture reside. They all follow their own traditions. so they have their own calendars.

But the majority of the people, especially the Hindu population follow the Vikram Samvat calendar. This Era was started by the great Emperor of Ujjain (India), Vikramaditya.

The current year as per the Vikram Era is 2068. On the first day of this year, all the people of India and those who are attached with India and Indian culture, celebrate the yew year.

People greet their relatives and friends on this day. Shops offices and factories remain closed on this day, as this is public holiday in India. On occasion of the new year, people celebrate festivals almost for one week. This new year festival is sale bonanza for the sellers of clothes, sweets, and fashion goods. People go out for shopping in these days and spend their saved money for purchasing new clothes and sweets. The shops in market offer much discounts on these days of festivals, too.
